BAT Program / Public AwarenessThe Forensic Tests for Alcohol Branch developed and implemented the state's first Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit Program in 1996. The BAT Program utilizes six 32' buses equipped for processing impaired drivers. The BAT Mobile Units displays logo of "Booze It & Lose It, Don't Drink & Drive and 0.08 It's The Law". The BAT Mobile Unit Program plays a major roll in the public health field through education and prevention resulting in lives saved and smarter decisions about drinking and driving. The BAT Mobile Units are used at highway safety/educational events coordinated by law enforcement and/or local safe community coordinators. Highway safety events reach out to the public to explain the dangers of drinking alcohol and driving. The BAT Mobile Units are utilized at high schools, colleges and universities across the state to heighten the awareness of young adults about the dangers of driving while impaired. The BAT Mobile Units have been
labeled as one of the most visible and effective programs in the state,
not only for enforcement but also as a public health service in educating
North Carolinians about the dangers of drinking and driving.
