supported with educational videos and other audiovisual tools, printed
activity materials and interactive exhibits. Instruction covers
dental disease prevention, oral hygiene practices, dental injury prevention,
appropriate diet, consumerism and professional dental care practices.
These programs are targeted towards elementary aged children to establish
good oral hygiene habits.
Community
Statewide
community-based education/promotion programs use a variety of educational
tools and methods. Instructional programs on selected topics, portable
educational/promotional dental exhibits, educational videos and slides
and media promotion campaigns are available across North Carolina
by contacting the Dental Public Health Hygienist
in your county.
Professional
Education
Education
programs for health care providers, educators and other professionals
include instruction on selected topics; printed
educational materials; and pre-service and in-service training
for teachers, health professionals and others. Training and instructional
materials are provided to health care professionals through local
organizations, the university system, the community college system
and dental and medical publications. Training in the comprehensive
dental health curriculum, Framework for Dental Health Education, including
companion videos and study guides, is available for all elementary
teachers in the state. Parents who school their children at home can
also use this curriculum.
Into the Mouths of Babes is an oral screening and fluoride varnish
program, sponsored by the NC Oral Health Section, that trains medical
professionals to provide health education and oral preventive care
to the youngest Medicaid-covered children. Through this program, parents
of young children receive oral health education from their child's
doctor at the child's regular check-ups.
