5 A Day in North Carolina
The Physical Activity program is licensed by NCI to administer the public
sector component of the public/private partnership 5 A Day program in
NC. The program is administered through the NC Statewide 5 A Day Coalition
and its subcommittees and promotes the simple, positive message to eat
five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The state 5
A Day Coordinator, branch nutritionist, serves as staff to the Coalition
and as the liaison to NCI.
The 5 A Day Coalition has over 200 members who represent multiple governmental
and industry partners. The PAN Unit, in conjunction with the 5 A Day Coalition
Steering Committee, provides direction for the NC 5 A Day Program. The
Coalition has four subcommittees involved in resource development, communications
and marketing, local interventions for children and adults, and special
events. Members work collaboratively in spreading the 5 A Day message
in North Carolina.
Based on the highly significant results obtained in the Black Churches
United for Better Health 5 A Day research project, a training module for
delivery of nutrition intervention in partnership with Black churches
has been developed and is being tested and revised in collaboration with
two local health departments.
