Office of Genomics
The rapidly developing science of genomics-research into
human genes and chromosomes-has potentially vast implications for both
individual people and for society as a whole. The Office of Genomics in
the N.C. Division of Public Health works to ensure that North Carolina
monitors new genomic knowledge not only in terms of science and technology,
but also with respect to ethics, law and policy.
As sponsor and coordinating
agency for the North Carolina Task Force on Genomics and Public Health,
the N.C. Office of Genomics published the North Carolina Public Health
Genomics Plan in January 2004. The Task Force brings together a diverse
group of advisors in a continuous monitoring process to ensure the benefit
of genomic advances for all of North Carolina citizens. With strong leadership,
discoveries in genomics can be channeled into more effective disease detection,
prevention, and treatment initiatives that will improve public health.
